LADT Archaeological Base
A dedicated base for research, training, and public engagement in archaeology.
Why we need our own base
The development of LADT projects at Histria and in the MAB, as well as collaborations with other Romanian and foreign institutions, is heavily limited by reduced accommodation capacity during field missions. A base of our own would also strengthen our relationship with the wider public — making it easier to host volunteers, organise visits with pre-university students, and run archaeology-themed team-building events.
Currently, LADT teams are generously hosted at the MINAC and ICEM Tulcea bases at Histria and Slava Rusă, which either have limited capacity relative to LADT's maximum research objectives or are used by several teams from different institutions at the same time.
Our own land in Baia
In 2023 we obtained 3000 m² of land in free use from the Baia Commune Town Hall (Tulcea County), with the purpose of building a container-based archaeological base with an initial maximum capacity of 40 people.
The base will include 10 living containers (each with its own toilet and shower, AC, 4 bunk beds, wardrobe, desk and chair), a kitchen container (cooking setup and refrigerators) and pantry, joined with two more containers serving as the dining, presentation and lecture hall. Three additional joined containers will serve as the storage for materials and tools and the materials processing area — fitted with metal shelves, workbenches, chairs and a wide sink for washing pottery — plus a separate container with 2 toilets and 2 showers.
Building the base, step by step
Such an investment is a major challenge, even with the strong support of the University of Bucharest, especially in the context of the current crisis. We have therefore divided the project into several phases:
- Fencing the land with a metal fence.
- Building the electrical and hydraulic system.
- Preparing the land, purchasing and installing the containers.
These objectives have the advantage that (apart from objective 1) they can be reached in parallel and gradually.
To this end, those passionate about archaeology and willing to support its development in our country are kindly asked to support us financially or in other ways — essential help for us.
